American Baby Faire-Chicago

We had such fun at the ABF in Chicago. Actually, I had fun, since I went by myself:) But I did get to meet a lot of great Chicago babywearing mothers, and they were fabulous. It was my first time away from Elijah for more than a day or so. He is now 2 1/2, almost 3 actually, and spends a ton of time with his dad, so I felt okay about leaving him. I got to go back to the city I grew up in, and spent the time with my brothers and sisters, so it was very worth going. But I can't wait to see my little one again!

The best part about owning a baby business

One of my favorite parts of owning a baby business is meeting my customers. Since most of our orders are web-based, it is always such a nice treat to have a mom or dad come in and try on their new sling in person. This great couple came today with their very adorable 6 month old, Gabrial. I have actually made a lot of friends here in Boulder this way. And it is nice to be around babies again since my baby is not quite a baby anymore.

Doll Slings!

How cute is this? The Domestic Diva reviewed our doll slings. Isn't this little boy so adorable with his Elmo?

I *love* the doll slings because they teach children how to nurture just like their mothers. It also gives them a sense of importance when a new sibling comes, easing the transition.

Here are some of my favorites of my little boy (Elijah) and some of our wonderful customers. Look at how Elijah is beaming in the first picture. He really is proud that he is caring for his velveteen bunny, just like mama cared for him. He wears his doll sling all the time.

We have weighted baby dolls for mothers to practice on, and it is so funny when he puts one in his doll sling! It literally pulls him down to the ground, it is so heavy.

I wonder how constantly being surrounded by slings and babies in slings will affect him later in life...it is his entire reality, especially since he is at work with me two full days a week. He seems to love it so far. And I find he is extremely nurturing to younger babies, holding and petting them, getting them toys and hugging them when they cry. Babywearing works!

Here is a true testement to how swanky I really am:
This is what I looked like when I first started karma baby. I worked in my pj's all day with the baby in the sling! Not so swanky then, but maybe I am a little swanky now;)

Hey, it is the summer for fabulous reviews. Ours slings have really gotten so much great press in the last few months, we are so happy! I am actually an avid reader of the blog, I love to read about all the celebrity mamas. Now, if only Gwen Stefani would wear one of our slings in public, that would really make my day:) Mila Jovovich actually just ordered four of our slings, so we'll have to wait for those pictures!

Last night Darien of Zolowear came into town so we all got together for dinner. Babywearing is one of the only industries , I think, where competitors often get together as friends. We are all moms, after all. It was a lovely dinner.

Introducing Karma Baby Sling's newest product! I just love these little totes. Made from a variety of our fabulous fabrics, these little purses hold 4-5 diapers plus a soft wipes case (wipes included). Stick it in the pouch under your baby's head as an infant pillow and go or slip it around your wrist to use as a tote! What a great invention:)

2 New Fabrics!

First off, I want to say our new photographer rocks! I was worried that we would not find someone as good as our last photographer in Atlanta, but look at these new photos! They are great! Andrew took these photos in about 10 minutes flat, and got some really great ones. I can not wait until we actually go out with other models. Our next shoot will be at the Pearl Street mall in Boulder, Colorado. I think we will get even better photos so keep checking back for updates. I am sure you are all a little tired of seeing me as the model over and over again.

I am totally in love with these two new prints. I love picking out fabrics, it is really one of the best parts of my job.

Can you believe this is the same exact print as Starry Night? It is gorgeous, just gorgeous in these soft pinks with a splash of black. This sling ended up being even better than I could imagine. Plus, it is not too pink, so you can use it for a little boy, too.

I know, some of you may say, "another toile?" Do we really need another classic toile sling? The answer is yes! This type of print is perfect for babies. I remember picking out things for Elijah, and I always just loved the toile diaper bags, slings, blankets, etc... I really feel like you can't have too many choices in this classic print. Check out Dreamland, Playland, Sweet Ema, and the newest addition, Wonderland.

Edited to say: I just noticed the picture on the wall behind Kristie. It is actually a picture of me, and it looks like I am looking down on her. I wonder if she feels like I am "watching" her all day, lol.

Here is Nikki, our fabulous full time-on site seamstress, carrying our star model in the original Karma Baby Sling. This kid is almost 2 1/2 and still fits in cradle style into one of our pouches!-and, look at how well this pouch has held up after years of use. His dad picked out this fabric-I had nothing to do with it, I swear!

Another photo shoot...

This time, we had to do an impromptu shoot in our backyard, so I handed my seamstress the camera and told her to her to get shooting. Elijah, almost 2 1/2 now, has totally fallen back in love with the sling. He loves for me to carry him in it where ever we go. So while we prefer to have little babies for our photos, he is my sweet little model and I can not help but use him for our photos. Isn't it fun to compare these photos to the first ones we took when he was 7 months old (look at the Whimsy fabric on the Karma Baby Sling site, that is him). This is a great new organic sling that is only offered through Mommasbaby.com

The Water Sling Photo Shoot

We could not take water sling pictures in the middle of the winter in our last photo shoot. So...on a trip to my mother-in-law's we decided we would take the pictures ourselves in her "Endless Pool." Elijah is now two years old, and does not go in the sling that much anymore. At our last photo shoot I was only able to get one picture with him! Luckily, he still loves to be in the sling in the water-I think it makes him feel safe. We had to constantly splash water around and his grandma jumped up and down on the sides to try to get him to smile. There is a current in an endless pool, so it is a little scarey to a toddler.

Anyways, we ended up getting one perfect picture:

I love how happy he is in this picture, the drops of water are framing his face, and the color of the sling is just gorgeous.

This one was okay, but the color really does not do the sling justice.

Moving Karma Baby to Boulder!

Karma Baby is moving to Boulder! We are so, so happy to be moving back to the place it all started. You really can't find a more beautiful town than Boulder. It is nestled right in the foothills of the mountains. People are outside all the time, the sun is always out, and natural living is the norm.

We are so glad to be going back. I envision setting up Karma baby in a contemplative way, with great employees and a more relaxed atmosphere. Really, it is stressful running a business, and I think this is really going to help. Plus Elijah (2 years old almost!) is going to be so happy there. Wish us luck! I will update the blog when we move.

Sewing Set Up

Most of our slings are currently made off-site at a sewing house and a factory, but we still have a full-time seamstress to sew last minute and special items for us. Since we are moving to Boulder in a month and are going to phase out this part of our business, I thought I would post some pictures.
This is our cutting table. Let me tell you, it is a pain to cut all this fabric! We rigged it so that we can cut two rolls at once. Pictured is both sides of the Kiwi-Charcoal Reversible Micro-fleece sling.
I am putting up this picture so you can see our scary fabric cutter. This thing is massive, and very dangerous. I would obsessivly come in and look for the cutter in case Elijah somehow got close to it. We have since retired it and are using the electric scissors again, per a worried mama's request:)

A Baby Sling Photo Shoot

Here are some snapshots I took while the photo shoot was going on (someday I will figure out how to put these pictures in an aesthetically pleasing way):

This is my favorite part of the business. I want to be an amateur photographer, I just don't have a good camera yet. Someday soon I will get all the equipment I need and set up a little studio so that we can take all of our own pictures. For now, we have a fabulous photographer in Atlanta that has done most of our photos.

Basically, it is three hours of total chaos for me, but a lot of fun for the models. At this particular shoot, we had planned on shooting in Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta. When we drove in we found there was some huge football game going on nearby, and the streets were crowded and there was no parking. For a half an hour in the car I had to frantically call the photographer and models and try to get them to all meet elsewhere. We ended up shooting on the Emory University campus, where we had shot before, and it ended up being great anyways.

Most models have never worn a sling before, so when they get there I have to quickly size them and show them how to use them. These mamas are natural. Don't they look like they have been babywearing for forever?

I get one person ready and the photographer sweeps her off for the first photos. I get the next one ready and then am just quickly switching them in and out for three hours. The babies do exceptionally well. You would think they would get fussy, but we have been lucky in getting really calm and happy babies that like the sling from the start.

The hardest thing is matching the sling to the clothes that the mother and baby are wearing. Sometimes it is challenging. This model is absolutely gorgeous and her baby is adorable. But the red that the baby was wearing clashed with a lot of our slings (ie the brown fleece). We ended up getting fabulous photos for the Bella sling with her though by pulling the sling up to cover most of the red and throwing on a white sweater.

My favorite pictures were the Eyes of the World Organic ones. I just *love* this baby. I can't get enough of all that hair after my own baby being bald for 1 1/2 years. We call her "Suri-baby" at KB headquarters because she looks just like Suri Cruise.

Meet the Karma Baby Team!

Here we go! My name is Stacey and I am the creator, designer, and owner of Karma Baby Slings. I created the Karma Baby Sling in 2005 right after my son, Elijah Sirius (pictured with me left) was born. Everything grew very quickly (perhaps due to many 80+ hour weeks) and we are now carried in stores throughout the world. We are still a small business run by women, though, and hope to keep it small for some time. I am a single mommy, so having a business that I can run with my son running around is the ideal situation.

I feel so lucky to be able to work with such wonderful women that work so hard and still take the time to play with and nurture my son. Elijah is our most helpful employee.

He regularly helps Jessica with shipping, so if you see some scribbles on your packing slip, that is because you got the VIP treatment:)

We have two U.S factories making our slings, but need to supplement our supply by having a full time seamstress and home seamstresses. Nikki is our current resident seamstress (pictured below). She is also wonderful with Elijah as he often helps her unroll entire spools of thread.

I will be updating this blog frequently to give you a little peak into the workings of a small, mom-run business. Thanks!
